Meet Mary, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

A True Super Star

At Springfield Masonic Community, our employees are super stars! We recently sat down with Mary, an LPN so she could share her story and the success she’s had at Springfield Masonic Community. Meet Mary, a Springfield Masonic Community Super Star!

How long have you worked at Springfield Masonic Community?

I have worked at SMC for 3 ½ years and I have been a nurse for 25 years.  I have two daughters.  They are 21 and 23 years of age.  My oldest was in the Army for a few years and decided that she wants to follow in my footsteps and become a nurse.  She’s currently in nursing school.

What makes Springfield Masonic Community different than other senior living communities?

SMC is a wonderful community and I enjoy coming to work. I have worked at several other healthcare centers. I know what I expect and how a healthcare center should work. That’s what I see at SMC, and you don’t find it everywhere.

When I first walked in the door at SMC, I wanted to see that everything was clean and well organized. I wanted to know what the turnover rate was for SMC employees.  I quickly learned that these are not issues I needed to worry about here at SMC.

In this difficult time living through COVID, it’s important to me to know the patient ratio and the COVID protocols. Our patient ratio at SMC is excellent as are our COVID protocols.

What do your daily responsibilities include?

My responsibilities are virtually the same every day.  I take care of the health needs of our residents in the healthcare center. Making sure that our residents get their medications in a timely manner, every day is critical to providing them good care.

I am responsible for working with doctors, both here in the healthcare center as well as doctors in the Springfield and surrounding area.  It’s important to make sure those lines of communication are always open. I also talk with family members to make sure they are updated on the health of their loved ones.

What are some of your favorite benefits Springfield Masonic Community offers?

Springfield Masonic Community has several benefits that I really appreciate. The 12-hour shifts are just what I wanted.  The PTO works well for me too. Working every other weekend and holiday gives me the opportunity to plan for time with family and friends.

You also have the opportunity for bonuses. For employees that choose, you can pick up extra shifts which is a nice bonus for bringing in extra income.

What would you tell a prospective employee about Springfield Masonic Community?

SMC is a great place to work! The people at SMC are good to work with.  The training that I was provided as a new employee was excellent.  I received 10 days of training. Now, I enjoy training some of our new nurses.

Barb, a nurse of just a couple of months at Springfield Masonic Community, came from a career in school nursing.  She was quick to express her thanks. Barb shared, “Mary is a fabulous trainer.  She was always so encouraging.”

One thing that is important to me is the location. I don’t live too far from SMC, which I prefer. The staff is very nice, and I know that I have a great team to work with.

Why do you love working at Springfield Masonic Community?

I like our leadership at SMC.  I know when I come to work that I don’t have to worry about chaos. Our leadership believes in accountability, which makes the work environment more pleasant for both the employees and our residents.
