At Browning Masonic Community, our employees are super stars! Meet Amanda, Manager of Food Services at Browning Masonic Community! She shared her story and the success she’s had working in senior living.
How long have you worked at Browning Masonic Community (BMC)?
I have worked at BMC for 9 years. I began as a Dietary Aid and then moved on to become a Cook. I was able to move up and I became a Lead Cook. When the position for Manager of Food Services opened, I thought about it and decided to interview for the position. I was thrilled to be offered the job, so I stepped into this new roll in August, 2021.
What makes Browning Masonic Community different than other senior living communities?
I haven’t worked at any other community, but I can tell you what I like about working at BMC. We are a smaller community, where everyone knows everyone. We are “one big happy family.” We work as a team and we work well together. We don’t let anybody fail. We take care of each other. You won’t find this everywhere.
What do your daily responsibilities include?
My days can look different every day. I might be creating new menus or ordering food. Some days I help in the kitchen or you might find me delivering food to the villas. Whatever needs to be completed is what I do that day.
I am excited to be working on the new menu for the Bistro, and it should be opening sometime in May. I enjoy talking with our community members. I do a dining talk once a month to learn what everyone might enjoy having for lunch or dinner.
What are some of your favorite benefits Browning Masonic Community offers?
There are several benefits that I really appreciate. The flexible hours works well for me and other food service employees. The HSA (Health Services Account) has been very beneficial for me. I put part of my paycheck in to this account and I use it for medical expenses.
One of the best benefits is one that hours and money can’t buy. It’s that feeling that every day, I am part of “one big happy family.”
What would you tell a prospective applicant about Browning Masonic Community?
I would tell a prospective applicant to be prepared to work as a team. Teamwork is a great way to learn your job and to get to know others. Teamwork makes every day you come to work more enjoyable.
Sometimes we do tasks that may not be in our original job description. Some people may think why am I doing this? I look at it as doing something new, a challenge and a way to learn a new skill.
Why do you love working at Browning Masonic Community?
When I was young, I lost my grandparents. I miss not having them in my life. Even though they can’t be replaced, our community members are like having a building full of grandparents. I look forward to seeing them every day.
I was recently married. Our community members were so excited for me. They enjoyed seeing my wedding pictures. They made me feel so special. Just ask any of the BMC staff and they will have their own special community member story to share.
