Meet Valerie, Dietary Aide

A True Super Star

At Browning Masonic Community, (BMC) our employees are superstars! We recently sat down with Valerie, a dietary aide, so she could share her story and the success she’s had at Browning Masonic Community. Meet Valerie, a Browning Masonic Community Super Star!

How long have you worked at Browning Masonic Community?

I started working at BMC in December 2021. I live across the street from Browning Masonic Community. I stopped over to see if anyone would like some spider plants and shortly thereafter, I visited a BMC craft show. I learned of job opportunities and here I am. That was the best decision I could have made.

What makes Browning Masonic Community different than other senior living communities?

I am from Buffalo, New York and while living there, worked in several types of jobs that provided care for adults. I worked in adult daycare as well as traditional nursing homes. What I quickly learned at BMC is that people, both residents and employees, are genuine. We are here to help meet many of the personal preferences of the residents, basically to make their lives the best they can possibly be. Everyone works as a team, and you certainly don’t find this atmosphere everywhere.

What do your daily responsibilities include?

I have a variety of responsibilities every day. I document all deliveries related to food service.  I make sure that the dining room is clean and well-stocked.  That includes making sure that dishes are clean too. I take orders as well as serve the meals and clean up when our residents are finished with their dinner.

One additional duty that I really enjoy is training the high school students. I train them in each step of their jobs and make sure they are comfortable before I turn them loose to do it on their own. I want them to feel good about what they are doing and understand that this is a job, but they need to have fun and make sure that each of the residents enjoys coming to dinner.

What are some of your favorite benefits Browning Masonic Community offers?

My favorite benefits are personal, not monetary. While making sure that I do my best to brighten each day for our residents, they do the same for me. We take the time to talk to each other. We laugh and smile, but the best part for me is their stories. I love to hear their stories and I feel honored that they are willing to share them with me. I leave each day with a smile on my face.

What would you tell a prospective employee about Browning Masonic Community?

BMC is a great place to work. You should consider joining our team. It’s okay to be nervous, but don’t worry, we work as a team, and we want everyone to succeed.  You will receive the training needed so you are prepared to do your job comfortably with a feeling of success.

Why do you love working at Browning Masonic Community?

Maybe I sound like I am repeating myself, but my answer will always be “our residents.” I enjoy just having a basic conversation, how has your day been or what activities did you enjoy today? Listening to their laughter and the stories is the best part of my job. I am a guest in their house and so often our residents make me feel like I’m part of their extended family.
