Retirement Bucket List Blog

After planning and saving for later in life, it’s important to embrace the freedom you gain when you finally reach retirement. Exploring your interests and experiencing new things is the best way to live life to the fullest. One of the best ways to outline your goals and interests in retirement is with a bucket list.

What is a Bucket List?

So, what exactly is a bucket list? The term is used in all aspects of life, whether it’s early adulthood after graduation, when getting married, before having children, or in retirement. A bucket list is typically a list of things you want to try and accomplish either before or during a major milestone in life.

Bucket lists are meant to be individual and unique to the person creating them, so get as creative and in-depth as you want with yours. Choose things that align with your interests, passions, and capabilities. And don’t be scared to add things that might seem a little left of center — bucket lists are for you to embrace saying “yes” more often and experiencing new things in life!

How to Start Your List

The best way to start making your bucket list is to find inspiration. You can use apps like Pinterest or Instagram to get visual inspiration for things you want to add to your list. Inspiration can come in many forms, so here are some creative tips to get started:

  • Name your list something catchy. You can keep it simple with “Retirement Bucket List” or get creative with things like “Golden Years Goals” or “Life Adventures before 80”. Remember, this list is meant to be personal and spark interest for you!
  • Make a list of things you already enjoy. How can you expand on those hobbies now? For example, if you love having fresh flowers in your house, take a floral arranging class to learn how to make colorful and unique displays.
  • Look into rekindling old hobbies and interests. Did you like fashion when you were younger? Sign up for a sewing class to learn how to make clothes!
  • Include your loved ones. Making time for new experiences with your loved ones is the best way to kick off a bucket list. Try things together like hiking a new trail, taking a class, or teaching them to play a card game you enjoy.
  • Imagine your perfect day. What would you do if you had a day without limitations? Use that as the basis to outline things to add to your list.

Creating Your List

The best part of bucket lists (besides actually crossing things off!) is creating what it’s going to look like. Whatever sparks your imagination, use it to create a fun and evolving list that makes sense to you.

For example, your bucket list could look like:

  • A vision board with pictures from magazines of the hobbies you want to try and places you want to travel to
  • A nice leather journal filled with in-depth scenarios of things you want to experience
  • A timeline on your calendar with specific dates to accomplish things by
  • An empty scrapbook waiting to be filled with photos from your new adventures (and maybe you take a scrapbooking class to learn how!)
