Dream Flights: The Greatest Generation Takes Flight
The greatest generation takes flight with Dream Flights!
Operation September Freedom flew into Ohio on August 11th and landed at Grimes Field in Urbana, Ohio. Dream Flights, a nonprofit organization, has six Stearman aircraft that regularly flies veterans across the United States. This year in August and September, Dream Flights is only flying WWII veterans. Their goal is to fly 1,000 veterans with their last stop being Pearl Harbor.
Springfield Masonic Community veterans had the chance fly, as well as several from Sidney, Ohio. They ranged in age from 95 to 101 years old. Family and friends came to see these men take their special flights. Some of the veterans had as many as four generations of family enjoying this adventure.
Emotions ran high with nervous family members wondering how their loved ones would be able to get in the plane. Veterans were thinking back on their lives during WWII. Several learned to fly in the Stearman while other veterans that weren’t pilots were excited for their first chance to fly in an open cockpit plane. As the nervousness subsided, there were tears as the families watched their loved ones take off for a 20 minute flight, land and receive their Dream Flight hat. Last, the veterans were joined by their families for pictures by the plane. These tears of joys were followed by laughter and stories of their flights. This day will long be remembered, with cherished memories.
