Meet Derek, Dietary Aid

A True Superstar

At Western Reserve Masonic Community (WRMC), our employees are superstars! We recently sat down with Derek, a Dietary Aid, so he could share his story and the success he’s had at Western Reserve Masonic Community. Meet Derek, a Western Reserve Masonic Community Superstar!

How long have you worked at Western Reserve Masonic Community?

I began working at Western Reserve Masonic Community in June, so I’ve been here just over six months.  I moved to Medina, Ohio three years ago and my wife and I love the area.

When I learned of the position at WRMC, a friend told me what a great place WRMC is to work, and you will quickly discover that you have many grandparents.  I couldn’t be happier about having extra grandparents since my wife and I are expecting our first child in just a few months.

What makes Western Reserve Masonic Community different than other senior living communities?

I’m unable to compare WRMC to other senior living communities, but I can compare it to other places where I have worked.  WRMC is very friendly and makes you want to come to work each day.  There is a feeling of “community” that you won’t find everywhere.

What do your daily responsibilities include?

I have many responsibilities, and they are consistent every day.  I open the “Hive,” which is the bistro here at Western Reserve Masonic Community. I open the bistro Monday-Friday at 7:30 AM for breakfast. Hot coffee is ready and waiting when the first resident stops in.

While the residents enjoy their breakfast, they tell me about their dinner from the day before.  I learn what they like the best, so I share that information with the dinner staff.  They like to get feedback, so they can keep our residents happy.

Next, I help with the transition for lunch. That includes restocking food and beverages.  Even while lunch is being served, we are getting ready for the dinner crowd. We make sure that dishes and silverware are ready to be placed on the tables.  I enjoy helping with the desserts for dinner.  Everyone loves our desserts.

What are some of your favorite benefits Western Reserve Masonic Community offers?

Since I will be a first-time dad in the next few months, the insurance is the best benefit I could ask for. Consistent hours are also very important to me.

The benefit that you can’t put a price on is my ability to give back to the community. If I can put a smile on our residents’ faces, then I know my day has been a success.

What would you tell a prospective employee about Western Reserve Masonic Community?

Consider joining our team but come with an open mind. Western Reserve Masonic Community is very well run. Our leadership knows how to keep WRMC running smoothly, so be prepared and learn to “go with the flow.”  You have the ability to make a difference. Always be respectful and start each day with a positive attitude. Consider doing a bit extra every day and you will discover that you will have quite a few new grandparents.

Why do you love working at Western Reserve Masonic Community?

That’s an easy question.  The people, both residents and the staff. Everyone works well together.  Jason French, our president, takes the time to greet each of us every day.  We, the employees, have a common goal, to make Western Reserve Masonic Community a great place to live for all of our residents.
