A True SuperStar
At Browning Masonic Community, (BMC) our employees are superstars! We recently sat down with Leslie, a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) so she could share her story and the success she’s had at Browning Masonic Community. Meet Leslie, a Browning Masonic Community Superstar!
How long have you worked at Browning Masonic Community?
I have been at BMC for eight months, however, I’m not new to this career field. I started working many years ago and stopped to raise my children. I have three children, two daughters and one son as well as five grandchildren ranging in ages from 4-13 years old. I was excited to get back to work and working in memory care. That is my special place and makes me enjoy going to work every day.
What makes Browning Masonic Community different than other senior living communities?
One thing stood out to me immediately when I came to work at BMC, and that’s the excellent activities. The Life Enrichment program is the best I have ever seen anywhere. Also, I have seen just how nice everyone is at BMC, both the residents as well as my co-workers.
Something else that stands out for me is the Masonic core values, and that’s important to me. I have family members who are Masons, and I’m glad to be working here where I can experience those values.
What do your daily responsibilities include?
I work three days a week, 12 hours a day and I love that schedule. For me, that means consistency in my daily responsibilities. When I arrive, I help our residents as they are getting up and ready to start their day. I assist with all of their meals in the dining room. We make sure everything is cleaned up and ready for the next meal. I help with showers and personal care. All laundry for the Pathways Memory Support Neighborhood is done right in our area. I help with that as well.
What I think is so important is spending quality time with our residents. I feel the interactions are one of the greatest things that we can do for our residents. I love to listen to their stories.
What are some of your favorite benefits Browning Masonic Community offers?
I love my schedule! Some people may think working a 12-hour day would be awful, but once you get used to the schedule it’s perfect. I work the same three days each week, so I have time for family and appointments that I need to do.
Taking care of older adults and children has always been the perfect fit for me. I learn so much from talking to our residents. I enjoy their stories.
What would you tell a prospective employee about Browning Masonic Community?
Start your job at BMC with the right mindset. You will be well trained, so use that training and your love of older adults to give our residents everything they need. You need to remember that you can’t rush them. Plan to take your time, knowing that it may take longer than you think to complete a task.
Take the time to get to know our residents and listen to their stories. You will learn so much from them, but more importantly you will learn so much about them.
Why do you love working at Browning Masonic Community?
My residents! They make each day special. As I look back over the few months that I have been here, one person and event comes to mind. One of our residents used a wheelchair and sometimes had a problem finding the right words. One day he kept bumping my chair with his wheelchair while saying “thank you.” He was so appreciative of everything and that was his way of showing me that he cared. That is a special memory that I will always hold close.
