Fourth of July celebrates the independence of the United States. Many of us spend the day celebrating with family and friends. Common traditions include things like swimming, cookouts, and – of course – fireworks. From newborns to those in their 100s, Independence Day can offer something for everyone. This makes it the perfect time to look at senior independence. Especially ways older adults can celebrate the holiday safely and independently.
Tips for Senior Independence in Summer
There are many ways for older adults to enjoy independence in the summer. Here are tips to be safe while maintaining independence as you celebrate summer.
Beat the Heat and Stay Cool
Summer holidays, like the 4th of July, often involve outdoor celebrations and traditions. Often, the weather can be one of the toughest challenges. Especially for older adults who are at a higher risk of things like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. As we age, our bodies go through many changes. Older adults sweat less and are less likely to become thirsty. This makes them more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead to beat the heat and stay cool. For starters, older adults should spend most of their time indoors with air conditioning and fans. Especially on days when there is a heat advisory. When you do go outside, be sure to dress for the weather. In general, it’s recommended to wear clothing that’s light-colored and loose-fitting.
Stay hydrated
Because older adults sweat less and aren’t as likely to become thirsty, they’re also more likely to become dehydrated in the heat. The key to staying hydrated is to drink water before you feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be experiencing slight dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water and other clear liquids every day. If you know you’re going to be outside in the sun or heat, be sure to drink extra water before, during, and after. It can be equally as important to be aware of what things can increase your risk of dehydration. Know if you’re taking any medications that make you more sensitive to the sun or more likely to experience dehydration. It can also be helpful to avoid things like alcohol and fried or salty foods.
Keep active but stay safe
Even when it’s hot outside, staying active is important. But, it’s important to do so safely. One of the best ways for older adults to keep active is going for walks. To beat the summer heat, plan outdoor activities, like walks, in the morning or evening when it’s cooler out. When you go outside, make sure you’re dressed for the weather and take water with you.
Pay attention to diet
Food is a big part of many American traditions. When you think of Independence Day, you likely think of barbeques, cookouts, pie, and ice cream. These foods taste good, but they aren’t always good for our health. That doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed though. Enjoy your favorite foods and festive treats in moderation. For older adults with certain health conditions, it can be trickier. Pay attention to how much salt and sugar are being consumed. Especially those from condiments and beverages. Some of your summertime favorites can even help you stay hydrated. Things like watermelon and pickles are particularly good for hydration.
Be social
There’s never a bad time to be social. But there can be something special about being social in the summer. Many summer traditions revolve around time with loved ones and friends. Cookouts, days at the pool or lake, evenings gathered around a fire, and more. There are endless ways that we celebrate summer. For older adults, being social can help maintain independence. Being social is key to overall physical and mental wellbeing. Having good wellbeing overall can go a long way towards maintaining independence. Older adults can celebrate Independence Day and be social with events like cookouts and fireworks.
Monitor for changes
It’s important to not overdo it. Pay attention to your body and watch for signs of things like exhaustion or dehydration. You may have to adjust your plans. It can be helpful to give yourself breaks. If you know you’re going to be outside in the sun and heat, try to find a way to take breaks indoors or in the shade. You know your body better than anyone. Only you can tell when your body may need rest. It’s okay to rest when you need to. In the long run, it will be better rest than overdo it. This can also be helpful for senior independence.
