Donald Muncy Taking Flight: A Signature Moment in a World War ll B-25J Medium Bomber

Donald Muncy Taking Flight Once Again

The volunteer staff at Grimes Airport rolled out the red carpet recently. Springfield Masonic Community resident Donald Muncy took flight again.

Muncy, 100, along with his daughter, Diana, visited the popular museum. The museum is home to Champaign Gal, a restored World War ll B-25J medium bomber. Muncy could climb aboard the nearly 80-year-old aircraft and take to the skies.

Pilot Dave Shiffer and co-pilot Chuck Mangold welcomed the former United States Naval Aviator aboard. They invited him to take the jump seat, directly behind the cockpit.

After nearly 45 minutes, the bomber returned to Grimes Field where it touched down and taxied back to the hanger. After shutting down and securing the aircraft, the flight crew asked Muncy to add his signature to those of fellow World War ll veterans inside the bomb bay before posing for photos.

Muncy said that the flight was very smooth and “a lot of fun”. He added that with the day’s flight on the aircraft model made famous by General Jimmy Doolittle and his Tokyo Raiders for their 1942 attack on Japan. After launching from the USS Hornet, he has now flown in nearly every World War ll B-series bomber. With the exception of the B-17 Flying Fortress…which is next on his to-do list.
